Location
Bovino is a small village of ancient origins that offers visitors a magical and timeless atmosphere. Perched upon the southern Subappennino Dauno, the town enjoys a strategic position that has given it a great historical importance.
Its origins are ancient, it was a Roman municipality and it is said that Hannibal had an encampment around "Vibinum". Important remains of Roman age are housed in the Civic Museum and the remains of Roman aqueduct. When The Roman empire collapsed, Bovino was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt by different peoples, including the Normans of Drogone, which remains the imposing tower of the ducal castle.
Having suffered several dominations Bovino entered a period of permanent control under the Duchy of the Guevara family of Spain, who transformed the castle into a large and elegant dwelling and made it a vibrant cultural center that housed many illustrious personalities, including Torquato Tasso, Maria Theresa of Austria, Pope Benedict XIII and Giovan Battista Marino. Bovino from the tenth century was the seat of Bishops, which bears witness to its historical centrality not only from a political point of view but also from a religious perspective.
Symbols of religious life in the country are the Duomo, a magnificent example of Romanesque architecture, and the Valleverde shrine, a destination of pilgrimage in honor of Our Lady. The honor of the old town has earned the city an inclusion amongst “The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”. The serene and homely atmosphere makes Bovino the ideal place for those who for reasons of study, work or personal interest and curiosity want to come close to the study of Italian or to deepen their knowledge, spending a vacation that at the same time a world away from the cities of an Italian mass tourism.
